My church election manifesto ‘Be the Change’

I have filed my nomination for the elections to our Church Managing Committee for 2016-17. We have three groups in our Cathedral in Trivandrum but I am standing as an independent candidate from my ward. There are 1,400 families but less than 700 individuals have made it to the final voters list. I know I don’t have any chance against heavyweight candidates who have been Committee Members or Officer Bearers for the last 18-25 years but I want to give it a try.

These are some of my ideas for change in our parish:

1. Issues related to Holy Qurbana

We have three priests in our Parish. Apart from the main celebrant, one more priest should be available during the service to give absolution (husoyo), communion and offertory / benediction (kaimuttu)? This will take the load off the main celebrant and also speed up things. (At times, it becomes 11 by the time the second service gets over. Remember, we have the Sunday School after that.)

We should have a third service, preferably on Saturday evenings. This would be convenient for many and also reduce the rush on Sundays.

I have written earlier about the need to change the timings of our Christmas, Maundy Thursday and Easter services to more convenient timings. It’s time these changes are implemented. Please check out Christmas service timings in Indian Orthodox Churches. Individual parishes should have the freedom to decide on the service timings.

2. Sunday School

Our Sunday School needs a major revamp. Can we save our Sunday School?

3. OVBS

There are several issues plaguing our OVBS – be it selection of Superintendent, Teachers, Menu and what not. 70 year olds decide on what 7 year olds should do, eat, play etc. This has to change.

OVBS should be conducted for 10 days, the way it has been designed and not for five or six days.

Love Feast should be held in each class and not on a common basis. Last year, no one knows what happened to the Oreo biscuits that children contributed.

4. New Church Building

It’s time we decide on a bigger Church building. Do we need a new building or a bigger Church?

I was the person who introduced the SMS Alert system and managed it for about a year and a half. I am sure it has been beneficial to all.

Let’s start the change from small things and aspire for bigger results. Please support my candidature to ‘Be the Change’.

  1. Ephesians 4:11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Dear Brother,we are created with a purpose. God came down, paid an incomparable price by suffering insult and pain on the Cross,to redeem us from the eternal consequences of sin and power of the evil one. We are worth His Blood. He made us and also redeemed us .Hence he owes us twice. He is the only investor in our life. Church is the body of Christ. Listen to the Spirit of Christ indwelling in you, humble yourself in prayer and expose anything and everything that pushes the church away from the path of God set before us and revealed to us in the scriptures. May God Bless you.
